| Volkswagen India's Polo cup 2010, one of the most awaited motorsport events in the country, kick-started its innaugral season with round one at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati sports complex near Pune on May 30. The Volkswagen India-JK Tyre joint initiative saw immense spectator turnout to witness the competing drivers fight each other in the two races held on the street track. Support events included two karting races and a car stunt show. Results of the two races are as follows: Race 1: Driver Sailesh Bolisetti led the race from start and created history as the winner of the first Polo cup race in India. Saran Vikram followed Sailesh to finish second on the podium while Mohammed Fahad Kuty finished third with some impressive ovetaking manoeuvres. Unfortunately the rookie was given a 15 second penalty for overtaking under the yellow flag which promoted Kartik Shankar to third place on the podium. The 15 lap race was closely fought with the first six drivers finishing within a 10 second bracket. Mohammed Fahad Kutty's tyrewall scrape and Alisha Abdullah's first corner spin were some of the incidents that kept the crowd riveted. Race 2: Confident after his race 1 win, Sailesh demonstrated his dominance by leading the race and earning a double win. Kartik Shankar was the first runner up and Mohammed Fahad Kutty did it right this time around to take third position on the podium. Race 2 was as action packed as race 1 with two crashes and many overtaking maneuvers. With Volkswagen's global involvement in motorsports and JK Tyre's efforts for motorsports promotion in India, this championship is an ideal platform for young talent to display their skill and get better opportunities. The next round of the champoionship will be held at the Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore on July 17 and 18. |
